Espresso Porn

November 2, 2005

This morning, I forwarded a flickr gallery of espresso porn (don’t worry, its work safe) to the espresso buddies here at the office.

It didn’t spawn much conversation, but it got me more interested in why my shots didn’t pour like they do in the pics, even if I’m not using a naked Portafilter. After a bit of research, I’m convinced its due to my (lack of) tamping technique. The burr grinder has a built in tamper which I’ve used to somewhat compress the puck, but with no where near as much pressure or as elaborately as this procedure dictates.

I’ve dismissed it until now, thinking it was only for the perfectionists- perhaps in part because the bling Cimbali Jr here in my building didn’t have a proper tamper amoungst the rest of the hardware. But proper tamping seems to be a very common theme when discussing how to improve the espresso. (12 of the 50 are about tamping!)

So now I’m convinced the inconsitancies with my espresso has largely been ue to channeling through the puck- because when i pull the basket, sometimes I see a nice dry puck, sometimes I see a muddy mess. I think its time to invest in a proper tamper. And maybe a naked portafilter if I wanna get serious about learning…

And you guys thought I was geeked out before… I haven’t even busted out the stopwatch or bathroom scale!
